The Los Angeles Chargers will be down a man in their pass rush for the foreseeable future.
Edge rusher Khalil Mack has been placed on the injured reserve with a left elbow injury, head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters on Wednesday, ruling him out for at least the next four weeks.
“It's one of the toughest things I've ever seen. I was staring right at it,” coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday. “I've had an arm injury, too, and those are painful. I have a new level of respect for the toughness of Khalil Mack.”
Mack left Monday night's game against the Las Vegas Raiders at the end of the first quarter after appearing to awkwardly jam his arm between a teammate and opponent while attempting to make a tackle.
The 34-year-old had already established his presence against the Raiders, the club that drafted him fifth in 2014, after he sacked quarterback Geno Smith to force a Las Vegas field goal. His 12 1/2 sacks against the Raiders are the most versus any team.
He is a three-time first-team AP All-Pro player and a nine-time Pro Bowler.
Mack has recorded double-digit sacks five times, including a career-high 17 in 2023. But he had just six sacks last season.
